My editing experience with professional to creative writing is one of the focuses of my portfolio. Listed below are some examples of my editing work.

Report – Original Report – Revised
In this example, I edited and revised my investigative report, “Technical Communication and Representation of People with Mental Illness.” I expanded the report to include my continued research in feminist and disability studies. I edited the report in order to give a critical eye to how I, as a technical communicator, represent people with mental illness in this report and also how I represent myself as an ethical technical communicator.

Thesis – Original Thesis – with Edits
In this editing example, I edited part of a thesis for a master of arts in philanthropy and development candidate. Much like the creative writing editing example, I only had contact with the author through email. I had to consider the author’s perspective and my own role as the editor as well as the audience of the thesis: a graduate committee and the graduate students that will read the thesis. This was a largely different audience than the piece of creative writing, and I had to analyze the needs and expectations of this audience in order to edit the text ethically and effectively.

Screenplay – Original Screenplay – with edits
In this editing example, I edited a television script for a pilot of a sitcom. I kept in contact with the author of the script through email and never met her in person. While editing the script, I had to constantly consider the perspective of the author, the language I used when communicating with the author, and my role as the editor. I also had to consider that target audience for the script, and how the author and I balanced her representations of the characters and audience with meeting the expectations and needs of the audience.
